Abstract

Early 20th century book collector Otto Ege removed pages from medieval texts and regrouped them into forty boxes now scattered around the United States, Canada and Europe. The University of Saskatchewan, in partnership with other institutions holding the boxes, is in the process of locating as many as possible with the goal of digitally reassembling at least one of the original texts. The project has had the unanticipated effect of focusing scholarly and public attention on the unit of the individual page as opposed to the more familiar object of scrutiny, the book.

Résumé

Au début du 20e siècle, le bibliophile Otto Ege a enlevé des pages de textes médiévaux et les a regroupées en quarante boîtes qui sont maintenant disséminées aux États-Unis, au Canada et en Europe. L'Université de la Saskatchewan, en partenariat avec d'autres institutions qui détiennent ces boîtes, est en train d'en localiser autant que possible, avec l'objectif de restituer numériquement au moins un des textes originaux. Le projet a eu l'effet imprévu d'attirer l'attention des chercheurs et du public sur l'unité de la page individuelle par opposition à cet objet d'études plus familier, le livre.
