Note to the reader Au lecteur
The following is meant to provide some guidance to the reader of CHWP, to invite comments on all aspects of our series, and to suggest a means of continuing discussion on the subjects and arguments presented in CHWP.

Please do not hesitate to contact the editors, at epc-chwp@chass.utoronto.ca, with your suggestions and criticisms.

A. Viewing and navigating

  1. Browser. These pages have been designed with Netscape in mind, chiefly versions 2.0 and above. As far as we have been able to ascertain, the articles in CHWP can be read with most browsers, including Lynx, although Netscape 2 "extensions" may be found in a few instances. Difficulties in reading with your browser should be reported to the editors.
  2. Navigation. Explicit navigational links are usually provided. This is not the case with notes, figures, and bibliographical references. To return to the text from these, use the Back feature of the browser.
  3. Accented characters in Lynx. For these to be displayed correctly, communication between the user's machine and the net server must be set for 8-bit transfer using the ISO Latin 1 character set; in many cases this is the default setting.
  4. Graphics and images. Wherever possible, figures are provided using HTML. Some graphical images are used, however; these cannot be viewed with Lynx.

B. Citing CHWP publications

We suggest that in referring to publications appearing in CHWP, you include all the information given for the item on the Titles / Titres page: name of the author; title of the publication; title of the series; section and accession number; date of publication. An example is given here for your convenience:

WINDER, W. (March 1996). "Reading the Text's Mind: Lemmatisation and Interpretation from a Peircean Perspective", CHWP A.3.

In addition, the URL for the CHWP homepage,

    http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/epc/chwp/

should be specified, either implicitly in an anchor tag of which "CHWP" is the hotword, or explicitly in a bibliographical note.

For citation of material within an article, please refer to the section and subsection numbers; for example:

"The shift in text worlds is an essential property of the type-replica relationship, as is the predictability of the defining text. But fundamentally, a type is by nature a semiotic item that is beyond considerations of time and space" (Winder 1996: 2.2).

C. Continuing discussion

We invite formal submissions in response to any publication of CHWP. The normal vehicle for immediate epistolary or conversational response is the electronic seminar Humanist, information about which is accessible on the Web at the URL

A. Lecture et navigation

  1. Navigateur. Ces pages ont été conçues avec Netscape 2.0. Dans la mesure où nous avons pu le vérifier, les articles des CHWP peuvent se lire avec la plupart des navigateurs, dont Lynx, malgré la présence ici et là d'"extensions" Netscape. Veuillez avertir la rédaction des problèmes de lecture éventuels.
  2. Navigation. Dans la plupart des cas, un lien navigationnel explicite est présent. Dans celui des notes, figures et références bibliographiques, il faut se servir de la fonction "Back" (retour en arrière) du navigateur pour revenir au texte.
  3. Caractères diacrisés dans Lynx. Pour que Lynx puisse afficher correctement les caractères diacrisés, il est nécessaire de sélectionner transfert = 8 bits, alphabet = ISO Latin 1 pour la communication avec le serveur local; dans beaucoup de cas, ce sont déjà les valeurs par défaut.
  4. Figures. Là où c'est possible, les figures sont créées au moyen du HTML. Quelques figures saisies en mode image ne peuvent s'afficher en Lynx.

B. Mention bibliographique des publications des CHWP

Dans les mentions bibliographiques des publications des CHWP, nous recommandons l'indication de toutes les informations données sur la page "Titles / Titres": nom de l'auteur; titre de la publication; titre de la collection; lettre de section et numéro d'acquisition; date de publication. En voici un exemple:

En outre, l'adresse de la page d'acceuil des CHWP,

doit être précisée, soit implicitement dans un lien actif à l'endroit du titre "CHWP", soit explicitement dans une notice bibliographique.

Pour ce qui est de l'identification d'un passage à l'intérieur d'un article, indiquer le numéro de section; par exemple:
