The papers contained in this volume were first given at a symposium on "Historical Dictionary Databases and Data Retrieval Requirements" held at the University of Toronto in October 1991. The historical dictionaries concerned are all ones that first appeared in manuscript or print, and are, or have been, the subject of research projects involving their electronic capture. The majority of the texts belong to the tradition of French lexicography and describe a past state of the language.

Ce recueil renferme les communications faites dans le cadre d'un symposium, tenu à Toronto en octobre 1991, sur "Les bases de données de dictionnaires historiques et les besoins programmatiques", organisé par l'unité de recherches en lexicographie française (URLA 4 INaLF) du Department of French de l'University of Toronto. Les dictionnaires historiques en question ont tous paru à l'origine sous forme manuscrite ou imprimée; ils font, ou ont fait, l'objet de projets de recherche visant à les informatiser. Pour la plupart ces textes appartiennent à la tradition de la lexicographie française et décrivent un état de langue révolu.

These papers, first presented at a "Computer-based Chaucer Studies" conference held at the University of Toronto in November 1992, show that computer technology is challenging the study of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer in editing and textual criticism, thematic analysis, analysis of language and style, and identification of sources and influences.

Les communications de ce volume, présentées à l'occasion d'un colloque sur les Études chaucériennes assistées par ordinateur (University of Toronto, novembre 1992), montrent l'omniprésence de l'informatique dans les recherches de pointe sur Geoffrey Chaucer, que ce soit dans les domaines de l'édition, de la critique textuelle et des analyses thématique, linguistique et stylistique ou dans celui de l'identification des sources et des influences.
